The sensor is designed with a transducer that shines a light through either the finger or ear lobe. As the amount of light transmitted varies with the flow of blood the senor can be switched to record either the beats per minute or the waveform of the blood flow. When recording beats per minute the sensor automatically uses averaging techniques to ensure very accurate and reliable readings.
